This is a vintage 1959 Tudor wrist watch with a rare explorer dial that has a beautiful patina which is totally untouched with original hands which are also untouched. The age can be determined accurately as Tudor keep a record of numbers and this one has a clear number stamped on the case as you can see. It is a super looking piece with an excellent condition case for its age.
This is possibly a collectors piece as the Explorer dial with reference number 1244 and small Rose Tudor logo are certainly not a combination that I have come across in my long collecting hobby career; mid-century classics like this are also very popular with the fashion conscious. For those that may not be aware The Tudor brand was registered on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf who was the co-founded of Rolex in 1926.During the 1950s, Rolex invested heavily in the marketing and promotion of their Tudor brand, emphasising its quality and reliability. This unusual Tudor model houses a manually wound ETA calibre 1182 movement with lever escapement, 17 jewels and a compensation balance; it beats away at 18,000 BPH and has a Kif shock absorber. The beautiful and rare explorer dial has raised gold Arabic and triangular numerals with dots above.
The gold luminescent hands which have obviously lost their luminescence with age are the original as is central seconds hand. The 20 micron gold plated case and stainless steel rear plate are in really good condition for their age as I hope you can see in the picture gallery.
To compliment this watch an expensive real Ostrich Paw with leather backing strap has been fitted. Finally the watch is running very well indeed and has a wonderfully clean movement which has obviously been well looked after/serviced and looks really clean and wear free with no noticeable replacement bridges or other major parts.
